Sources of energy

All the energy on Earth came originally from the Sun.

Fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - they won’t last for ever
Wood - energy can be made from wood by turning it into gas first.
Nuclear - nuclear fission or nuclear fusion

'Renewable' energy sources
Solar – solar panels giving electricity or heat
Wind - using modern windmills on wind farms
Water - you can get energy from water in three ways
(a) Waves – better when the waves are large
(b) Tides - building a tidal barrage across an estuary
(c) Hydroelectricity - water falling down a mountainside
Geothermal– energy from hot rocks below the ground
Microbes - bacteria can be used to digest waste
