Daylight hours – summer

The diagram below shows the Earth at the Summer Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere. You can see that the northern hemisphere is pointing towards the Sun (away to the right of the diagram) and so the length of the day is much greater than the length of the night.



Daylight hours – winter

The diagram below shows the Earth at the Winter Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere. You can see that the northern hemisphere is pointing away from the Sun (away to the left of the diagram) and so the length of the day is much shorter than the length of the night.
