Stator in a motor

Question: Always resistors are connected in series to prevent over current. Why is the stator of an electric motor a parallel resistor?

Answer:

In a shunt wound motor (parallel) connection of stator and rotor:
The speed of the motor varies little under a changing load in this arrangement.
The controlling rheostat can be of light construction since field current is not large
The starting torque is directly proportional to the current
Shunt wound motors are used where speed control is essential such as in lathes and record players.
